San Cassiano, the gem of Alta Badia, is a village located at an altitude of 1,537 metres at the foot of the Fanes Sennes Braies natural parkland framed by the Dolomite mountains of Sas dla Crusc, Lavarella, Conturines, Settsass and Lagazuoi.
All around San Cassiano are some sites of particular historic and geological interest, Lagazuoi, Civetta, Falzarego, Cinque Torri, Cortina, Alleghe and the Armentarola area all bear witness to the history of the First World War, while on Mount Conturines it is possible to visit the cave where the bones of the “lion of the caves” and of local mountain bear Ursus Ladinicus were found after which the Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus in San Cassiano is named.
In the summer you can take relaxing walks across the meadowlands of Störes and Armentarola along the footpaths named Il Sentiero dei Larici (the larch path) and Il Sentiero di Meditazione (meditation) for all those in search of peace and wellbeing.
Fans of road and mountain biking can take off from San Cassiano on routes of unrivalled beauty, enjoying the unique experience of the Dolomites exploring the Passo Giau, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the route of the Maratona dles Dolomites and the Sellaronda tour.
From San Cassiano, during the winter season, it is possible to reach all the pistes of the Alta Badia ski resort, the Dolomiti Superski area and the famous Sellaronda carousel leaving directly from the Piz Sorega cable car.
Cross-country skiing enthusiasts can visit the cross-country skiing centre at Armentarola San Cassiano, with 26 kilometres of trails of varying degrees of difficulty, enveloped in the pristine natural landscape at the foot of Valparola Pass. There are numerous trails for hiking on foot and on snowshoes surrounded by the breath-taking scenery of the Dolomites.
